Birmingham man sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping and impregnating 12-year-old girl

A Birmingham man has pleaded guilty to raping a young girl he impregnated.

Jermaine Powers, 42, was arrested in 2020 for first- and second-degree rape.

Authorities said the charges stemmed from Powers having sexual intercourse with his ex-girlfriend’s 12-year-old daughter. The sexual abuse occurred from January 2017 to July 2018.

The abuse was discovered when the child became pregnant and a DNA test confirmed that Powers was the father.

According to court documents released this week, Powers pleaded guilty to second-degree rape in exchange for a first-degree rape charge being dropped.

Jefferson County District Judge Kechia Davis sentenced Powers to 20 years in prison.

Assistant District Attorney Tyerra Henderson prosecuted the case. Powers was represented by the Jefferson County Public Defender’s Office.
