Man sentenced to 14 years in prison for raping homeless woman in northeast Portland

PORTLAND, Oregon (KPTV) – A Portland man was sentenced to 14.5 years in prison for raping and abusing a homeless woman in the Parkrose neighborhood in 2022, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

In the early morning of June 19, 2022, officers responded to the area of ​​Northeast 115th Avenue and Northeast Sumner Street after a woman reported she had been raped.

According to court documents dated June 21, 2022, the woman told police that a man who lived in a mobile home near Northeast Marx Street held her captive in his mobile home and physically and sexually assaulted her.

Based on a description of the man and DNA evidence from a rape kit taken at the hospital, police identified James Earl Griffin Jr., now 39, as the suspect.

On June 13, 2024, a Multnomah County jury found Griffin guilty:

  • Two counts of first degree rape.
  • Two cases of first degree sodomy.
  • A case of first degree sexual abuse.
  • One count of fourth-degree assault.
  • One count of coercion.

The jury found Griffin not guilty of two counts of first degree kidnapping.

On Wednesday, Judge Cheryl Albrecht sentenced Griffin to 175 months in prison. He will be transferred to the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
