Nipigon OPP responds to threatening incident at school

(NIPIGON, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) informs the public that one person has been arrested and the curfew and security measures at Nipigon and Red Rock schools have been lifted.

On September 4, 2024, at approximately 1:03 p.m., the OPP received a report of a threat to an individual. In the interest of public safety and in cooperation with the Superior-Greenstone District School Board, all schools in Nipigon and Red Rock were placed on lockdown or secured.

An investigation was immediately launched and at approximately 2:14 p.m. OPP members were able to locate and arrest the individual. At this time, schools were notified and curfew and security measures were lifted. The investigation is ongoing.

The OPP recognizes the emotional impact this can have and we would like to thank all members of the public for their cooperation during this investigation. The safety of our community is our top priority and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure all residents feel safe and protected.

COLLISION LEADS TO MULTIPLE CHARGES

(FORT FRANCES, ON) – A single-vehicle accident on Highway 11 that left two people hospitalized resulted in multiple charges against the drunk driver.

On August 30, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Fort Frances responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 11, approximately 40 km east of Fort Frances. The vehicle involved left the highway and collided with a rock outcrop. Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle were transported by ambulance to the hospital in Fort Frances for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the accident revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and a breathalyzer test was performed at the hospital upon request.

A 33-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested and charged with the following offences: driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs with a blood alcohol content over 80%, dangerous driving and making an outright threat to cause death or bodily harm.

The accused’s driver’s license was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. The accused was released by police and is scheduled to appear in Fort Frances Ontario Court on October 7, 2024 to answer the charges.

Fact about driving while under the influence: Breath testing machines are portable. A qualified technician can perform a breath test anywhere there is a power supply. If you are unable to provide a breath sample due to an injury, police may request a blood sample that a doctor can fill out. If you plan to drink, do not plan to drive.

OPP files assault charges

(DRYDEN, ON) – Members of the Dryden Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment have arrested and charged an individual with assault.

On September 4, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m., members of the Dryden OPP Detachment responded to an incident at a local business in the Town of Dryden.

As a result of the investigation, a 33-year-old man was charged under the Criminal Code for: assault on a spouse and failure to comply with a release order – except for appearing in court.

The accused was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Dryden on September 5, 2024.

To protect the identity of the victim, the OPP is not releasing names.

Weapons investigation leads to seizure of drugs

(Kenora, UK) – An investigation led by the Kenora Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), with assistance from the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB), Provincial Operations Intelligence Bureau (POIB) and the OPP Canine Unit, executed a search warrant in the area of ​​Rabbit Lake, Kenora. Charges have been laid against one person as a result of this search warrant.

On 25 AugustthA 34-year-old Kenora man was arrested on weapons charges in the Rabbit Lake, Kenora area.

Shortly thereafter, a search warrant was executed on a residence in the Rabbit Lake, Kenora area, resulting in the seizure of a quantity of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription opioids, 4 replica handguns and items used to traffic controlled substances. The estimated street value of these drugs is over $100,000.

As a result of the investigation, the 34-year-old was arrested and charged with the following violations of the Criminal Code and the Narcotics Act: five counts of possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime valued at less than $5,000.

Complaint results in an impaired driver no longer being able to drive on the road

(ATICOKAN, ON) – A traffic complaint about a motor home swerving on the road ended with the arrest of an impaired driver.

On September 2, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Atikokan responded to a report of a motor home swerving on the road. Officers located the vehicle on Highway 11 near Armis Lake and conducted a vehicle stop.

The officer who responded to the call determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol and administered a roadside test. The driver failed the test, was arrested and transported to the Atikokan OPP detachment where additional breath tests were administered upon request.

A 72-year-old Thunder Bay man is charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration of over 80 mg. The accused’s driver’s license was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

The accused was released by police and is scheduled to appear before the Atikokan Ontario Court of Justice on October 24, 2024 to answer the charges.

Fact about driving while under the influence: The offense of impaired driving does not require the vehicle or transportation to be in motion. Legally, driving is presumed when a person is in the driver’s seat. The defendant must prove that he or she did not occupy that seat with the intent to move the transportation. Road safety is everyone’s shared responsibility. If you suspect an impaired driver, call 9-1-1.

Drug offenses against DRYDEN AIRPORT

(DRYDEN, ON) – An investigation led by the Red Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) with assistance from the Dryden OPP CSCU and the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service has resulted in the laying of charges against a Hamilton resident.

On August 28, 2024, shortly before 6:00 p.m., an individual was arrested at Sioux Lookout Airport and found in possession of a quantity of cocaine.

As a result of the investigation, a 21-year-old man from Hamilton was charged under the Narcotics Act for the following offence:

Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine

The accused is in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.
