Starting Friday, the MBTA is facing another closure, officials remind riders. The MBTA will suspend all Red Line Braintree Branch service between JFK/UMass and Braintree from September 6 to 29 for track work.

Shuttle buses replace Red Line stops in Braintree, Quincy Adams, Quincy Center, Wollaston, and North Quincy. Red Line shuttle buses terminate in Ashmont.

MBTA officials said they would “strongly encourage” Red Line riders to use the Middleborough, Kingston and Greenbush commuter rail lines for free during the closure. However, on the weekends of Sept. 7-8 and Sept. 14-15, stops on those lines will be replaced with shuttle buses. On those weekends, shuttle buses from Braintree to South Station will replace service.

The closure affects large parts of the Red Line Braintree Branch.

“The MBTA understands how these service changes will impact riders’ daily trips during this time, but we are committed to improving your trips in the long term with more reliable, punctual and safer service,” the MBTA statement said. “We thank riders for their patience as we work through this important work and for continuing to use our system.”

These closures will allow the MBTA to repair 18 miles of Red Line track, the statement said. The MBTA said the new repairs will reduce travel times on the Braintree Branch by 24 minutes.
