As Fallout: New Vegas’ horse modder gets OG developer’s seal of approval, he says he “constantly” compares his work to Red Dead Redemption 2

A mastermind Fallout: New Vegas Modder tries the seemingly impossible – he tries add rideable horses to Obsidian’s epic western RPG.

It’s been over a decade since the monumental release of New Vegas in 2010, but players are still finding ways to spice up the post-apocalyptic game. One such fan is Xїlandro Axeuora, a modder who hopes to bring fully functional horses and riding to the Fallout series’ most iconic spin-off. In an interview with aftermathAxeuora offers a deeper insight into its approach and the lengthy development process.

“In my head, I’m constantly comparing what the developers at Rockstar have created,” he explains, alluding to Red Dead Redemption 2 and his own impressive horses. “Animations aside, of course – I don’t have a horse or a mocap studio.” Axeuora, who says his mod cost him his “sanity,” says he keeps reworking things to meet the standards he envisions: “I keep rewriting the code, looking for that moment of ‘OK, this feels close enough.'”

As for recreating horses that resemble the impressive four-legged beasts from Red Dead, Axeuora does everything he can to achieve “the overall feel of natural horse movements without compromising the responsiveness of the controls.” He wants something “natural” and not hyper-realistic: “It’s a living, breathing creature. It can’t move and turn like an arcade tank.” Judging by the reactions of the former New Vegas developers, Axeuora does a great job.

In a post Jonathan Burke, gameplay programmer for New Vegas, addresses the modder and praises the work Axeuroa has done so far: “As a programmer of New Vegas, I can confirm that this is pretty damn impressive and everyone should applaud you for it.” Fans of the game also agree – numerous comments hailed the mod as “fantastic”, and I tend to agree as a Fallout fan and avid horse rider myself.
