Man gets 14 years in prison for raping homeless woman in NE Portland

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A Portland man was sentenced to 14 and a half years in prison for raping and abusing a homeless woman in 2022 in the Parkrose neighborhood, the Multnomah Co. District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Early on June 19, 2022, officers responded to the area of ​​Northeast 115th Avenue and Northeast Sumner Street after a woman reported she had been raped.

According to court documents filed June 21, 2022, the woman told police that a man living in an RV near Northeast Marx Street had held her in his RV where he physically and sexually assaulted her.

Based on a description of the man and DNA evidence from a rape kit taken at the hospital, police now identified 39-year-old James Earl Griffin Jr. as the suspect.

On June 13, 2024, a Multnomah County jury found Griffin guilty of:

  • Two counts of first-degree rape.
  • Two counts of first-degree sodomy.
  • One count of first-degree sexual abuse.
  • One count of fourth-degree assault.
  • One count of coercion.

The jury found Griffin not guilty of two counts of first-degree kidnapping.

On Wednesday, Judge Cheryl Albrecht sentenced Griffin to 175 months in prison. He will be transferred into the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
