Explosion at Ray Nixon Power Plant, injuries unknown | Fire

According to radio traffic, an explosion occurred at the Ray Nixon Power Plant south of Fountain on Thursday afternoon.

The Fountain Fire Department told the Gazette just before 3 p.m. that it was responding to the scene but had not yet arrived and could not confirm any details about the situation.

A Colorado Springs Utilities emergency response team and Colorado Springs Fire Department personnel also arrived on scene.

A UC Health helicopter was also spotted at the scene.

Injuries are currently not known.

In May 2018, two men were electrocuted in a drilling accident near the Ray Nixon Power Plant. According to earlier reporting by the Gazette, a drilling rig struck a power line.

Officials with Colorado Springs Utilities said in 2018 that the two were taking soil samples for an expansion of the power plant’s main entrance gate when their truck struck a 12,250-volt overhead power line.
