British woman dies in flash floods in Mallorca

The body of a British woman has been found in Majorca while a man remains missing after the couple were caught in flash floods, police on the Spanish island said.

Rescue services have been searching for the two men in the Torrente de Pareis canyon area since Monday.

The Spanish Civil Guard said the two men were hiking on a trail that connects the canyon to the Mediterranean Sea.

Ten other tourists stranded by the floods have been rescued. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected in the region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been contacted for comment.

The Civil Guard released images of a search and rescue team coming to the aid of a group of hikers stuck in the area.

The head of the Balearic Islands Mountain Rescue Group said the 10 people rescued had been “caught by surprise by the storm”.

“They were the ones who told us that they saw two people swept away by the waters,” said Juan Carlos Rodríguez.

Local authorities warned of “very intense storms” and urged people to avoid outdoor activities.

Police said Wednesday that the search had been suspended due to poor weather conditions.
