Douglas County prosecutor says OPD officer used legal force in fatal shooting

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – Douglas County Prosecutor Don Kleine said Thursday that no charges will be filed against the police officer who shot and killed a man last week after authorities served a no-knock search warrant.

Kleine said Officer Adam Vail acted within the law when he shot and killed 37-year-old Cameron Ford in an Omaha home near 78th and Redick Avenue on the morning of Aug. 28. Ford was hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting and died shortly afterward.

Under Nebraska law, the case will still be reviewed by a grand jury.

Kleine said no-knock search warrants are executed in the interest of officer safety and to prevent suspects from taking evidence.

Omaha police provided more details about the incident at a news conference on Sunday, saying police and federal authorities were executing a search warrant for firearms and narcotics — specifically fentanyl — at the home. Due to the suspect’s criminal history, the SWAT team was on the scene to assist.

Ford’s family gathered outside OPD headquarters earlier this week, calling for Officer Vail to be fired. Ford was the father of two daughters. They gathered Tuesday night along with about 30 others to show their support for Ford.
