One woman was killed and another is in jail after a fatal accident, Columbia police said

One woman was killed and another is in jail following an accident Wednesday night, according to Columbia police.

Sydney Ezelle, 27, has been charged with several crimes, including drunk driving causing death, police said Thursday.

According to police, a 58-year-old woman died in the two-vehicle collision. The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly released the victim’s identity.

According to police, the accident occurred at the intersection of Broad River Road and Lost Creek Drive. This is also near the intersection with Piney Woods Road and one block from the popular shopping and dining district on Harbison Boulevard.

Information about the circumstances of the accident and the time of the accident was not available.

No further injuries were reported.

According to police, Ezelle was charged not only with driving under the influence of alcohol but also with speeding and was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Jail records show Ezelle was also charged with a seat belt violation.

No bail has been set and she remains behind bars, according to jail records.

According to Richland County court records, Ezelle is scheduled to appear in court again on November 22.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, 582 people have died on South Carolina roads through Sunday in 2024. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, the department reported.

According to DPS data, at least 31 people died in crashes in Richland County in 2024. There were 61 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
