No charges filed against Nebraska police officer who killed man while executing no-knock search warrant

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) — A Nebraska prosecutor says he will not file charges against an Omaha police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man while executing a no-knock search warrant.

Omaha police Officer Adam Vail was part of a SWAT team executing a search warrant as part of a drug and weapons investigation on Aug. 28 when he fired the single shot that killed 37-year-old Cameron Ford.

Ford was not holding a gun, but Vail could not see Ford’s hands and fired as Ford charged at him, Douglas County District Attorney Don Kleine said during a news conference Thursday. Vail shot Ford “out of fear for his life and the lives of his colleagues,” Kleine said.

A loaded gun and drugs were found in the house, police said. The body camera footage was obscured by Vail’s ballistic shield, police said.

Ford’s family and other supporters gathered outside Omaha police headquarters on Tuesday to call on authorities to hold Vail accountable and fire him. Relatives said Ford is the father of two daughters.

Although Kleine is not pressing charges, the case must still be reviewed by a grand jury under Nebraska law.
