Coroner identifies man killed in wrong-way driving accident on I-35

SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Coroner’s Office has determined the identity of a man who died in a wrong-way driving crash on Interstate 35 Sunday morning.

Cesar Zamarripa Aviles died around 2:30 a.m. on September 1 in a collision with another vehicle on the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Pine Street, just east of downtown.

According to police, Aviles, who was driving a Ford F-150, was traveling north on the highway when he struck a black 2018 Chevrolet Silverado traveling south. Aviles was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, a 24-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and was last listed in stable condition.

I-35 was closed for some time Sunday morning and eventually reopened.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, police said.
