The principal of Nabokam Pally College in Saltha upazila of Faridpur was allegedly attacked with a hammer by supporters of two local Awami League leaders, including some students, and forced to resign.

The incident occurred around 10:00 am on Thursday and a video of it went viral on social media.

Several students of the college told The Business Standard that pro-Awami League principal Md Obaidur Rahman was involved in various corrupt activities since joining the college. During the anti-discrimination movement for students, he used police force to harass students.

They said they had been demanding Obaidur’s resignation since the fall of the Awami League government and had formed a human chain.

Obaidur said two men, Lalon and Monir – followers of two influential local Awami League leaders Kaiyum Molla and Kamrul Gazi, a member of the college’s governing body – forcibly took him and his son, along with several students, to a garden next to the college on Thursday morning and attacked them with a hammer.

At some point, Obaidur was forced to sign his resignation letter, he said.

He said that those demanding his resignation were not students and that Kamrul Gazi had committed the incident due to a personal feud.

Obaidur called for a fair investigation into the incident.

Kamrul Gazi denied these allegations and said he knew nothing about the incident. Kaiyum Molla could not be reached for comment.

Saltha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Anisur Rahman said the students had formed a human chain on September 1 demanding Obaidur’s resignation. The matter was then resolved and the students said they would not continue to demonstrate demanding the principal’s resignation.

The UN condemned the attack on Obaidur and said that some unidentified persons were behind the incident.

“Based on the information received, the army and police have been dispatched to the scene. The incident is being investigated and legal action will be taken,” he added.
